"Angel Pumping Gas"

I was getting some music by the Postal Service a few months ago and in the middle of that picked up a song on Kazaa that doesn't appear to be the same people... because it's totally different style.

The Postal Service is a collaborative effort between Seattle indie-rock band DCFC's Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel, which is just straight electronica. What they produced together was named by many critics one of the top albums of last year (and I agree).

Anyway... their tracks are great, but I also had thrown in with them a song by "The Postal Service" that's clearly not by the Postal Service put together by these guys...

Anyway, it happened to get played in my iPod the other day... and suddenly, I was saying, "who is this? this is great!" And it is a pretty catchy, well-done song.

It's called "Angel Pumping Gas" and I can't confirm whether or not the band's real name is the Postal Service or not. I think it appears to be a garage band that happened to have the same name, but I can't find out much about them.

Listen to the song: "Angel Pumping Gas" [mp3]

If anyone knows who this is (as in, where they're from, how old this song is, or anything else about them), please leave a comment below.

Update: We now know that the band is called Lindsey Pool. They have a pretty good selection of music (including this song) available at their web site [mirror], although they don't seem to be selling CDs.

Yep. I got the same song, and LOVE it. Who the heck is it?

Posted by: Michelle at March 6, 2004 08:31 AM

i also downloaded this song, and i badly want to know who it's really by, because it definitely does not sound like the postal service at ALL.

Posted by: brooke at March 6, 2004 08:31 AM

Hey, i found out who that song is by!! Apparently the group is called "Postal". I wasn't really able to scrounge up anything else about them, but i thought you might like to know.

Posted by: brooke at March 6, 2004 08:32 AM

jeeeah I got the song two, and I love it, but the postal service also rocks though

Posted by: mirjam at March 24, 2004 06:02 AM

yaa i got the same song and knew it wasnt the postal service and was wondering who it really was

Posted by: nick at March 29, 2004 10:28 PM

it says that the album is named Welcome to Hillsboro, did a search with "postal"+"welcome to hillsboro" nothing but a hospital site came up. It's strangely odd.

Posted by: katie at April 3, 2004 07:28 PM

Wow, so I downloaded the same song and have been on a mad search to figure out who it actually is, because as everyone has stated it sounds nothing like Postal Service. I googled the song title and got this web page. How convenient. And yes it is definitely "strangely odd".

Posted by: Melissa at April 5, 2004 10:15 PM

Yeah, same story as everyone else, but the thing I can't seem to figure out is the right word for its genre. It's not entirely ska and it's not a capella til the end. It's driving me crazy. The way it's sung and the tune and beat of it sounds similar to music of the late 1950s, early 1960s. Someone please give me the right name of this genre.

Posted by: Lily at April 6, 2004 01:10 PM

Ha, just so you all know...I'm in the same boat. That song is great, it's one of my favorite songs, but I have no idea about the band name, cd, or anything. It's sooo annoying! ARG!

Man, we're all no help at all. Lol.

Posted by: Jennifer at April 6, 2004 03:40 PM

Same old story here... I heard the song, loved it, but knew it wasn't the Postal Service. So this band is called Postal? I would love to pick up their album.

Posted by: Scott at April 9, 2004 10:10 PM

I think it may be another underground band with the same name... I love that song, I don't care who sings it. : < )

Posted by: Sarina at April 11, 2004 05:20 PM

I'm pretty sure it's not "The Postal Service" 'cos if you go to their web site (http://www.subpop.com/bands/postalservice) there's only one album listed and that track is not on it.

Posted by: Tony at April 15, 2004 01:50 AM

i got the same song too! i know it's definitely not the postal service... i googled "postal band" and there is a band called goin postal... it might be them but they don't have a list of songs on their website. so... i dunno lol!

Posted by: Jade at April 17, 2004 11:12 AM

i,like everyone here, have the same problem...i dl-ed angel pumpin gas awhile ago thinking it would be a new postal service song but it's definetely not the postal service..i love this song...good luck to anyone who can find out more about it...

Posted by: Jessica at April 17, 2004 12:38 PM

Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know, this song is by a band that used to be called Postal, my friend's brother is the singer. Last time I checked they changed their name to University. Anyway, they're just a local band from Hillsboro Oregon, don't know why they'd be on kazaa. Anyway, I'll find out some more info about where to get their albums so if you guys are interested, email me.

Posted by: Slavik at April 18, 2004 01:02 PM

hello all. i can decifer this mystery for you. my brother is the lead guitarist for this band. originally the band was called postal, then it was changed to University, and now the third and final name is Lindsey Pool. they are from hillsboro, and are working hard on new material. if you want to hear more or know more, email me, i'd be happy to fill you in.

Posted by: lindseypool at April 18, 2004 02:29 PM

So the mystery is solved! I had been dying to know who this band was and found this board when I googled 'Angel Pumping Gas.' Although the song was labeled as being by the Postal Service, it was pretty obvious to me that it wasn't them. I began sending my friends the song and explaining the mystery. Well, I happened to send the song to my friend Slavik, who then told me he went to high school with the kid who wrote the song. Pretty crazy!

Posted by: Scott at April 18, 2004 04:25 PM

ah, the power of the Internet: solving worldwide problems in two months flat.

Posted by: adam.b at April 18, 2004 05:19 PM

i lvoe that song as well, its the best. lets all have a party and listen to "Posta;" am i correct?

Posted by: Jess at April 18, 2004 08:39 PM

you can get their music at lindseypool.com

Posted by: Dan at April 21, 2004 06:15 PM

hehe..postal-university-lindsey pool->they still keep on rockin', sounds very good, but to be honest-> I like the postal service more, but then again they are two different styles,so I shouldn't compare them with eachother... I like them both..euh lindsey pool:did you guys never consider to come to belgium?

Posted by: sakke at April 22, 2004 09:02 AM

Dan->that's not my name... it's sakke! weird I posted under the name dan... owk then..my name will be sakke 'dan' from now on!

Posted by: sakke at April 22, 2004 09:05 AM

yeah i found that song too.. it sucks. i hate country. :)

Posted by: Ashur at April 27, 2004 08:37 PM

interestingly, if you search for the lyrics they are classified on some sites with other "postal service" songs...sigh. youve got to love the internet.

Posted by: super_grover at May 6, 2004 01:17 PM

Hey, yeah I found that song as well and I love it! - almost like rockabilly (reminds me of Cry Baby with Johnny Depp) ... kinda ... anyway slavik i would love some more of their stuff!

Posted by: daisy at May 8, 2004 02:20 AM

HEY WHAT THE HELL, IS THERE AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY, WE ALL LOVE THAT SONG, DAMN IS THE INTERNET COOL OR WHAT, LETS MAKE THIS BAND FAMOUS THEY DESERVE IT.

Posted by: ALEJANDRO FONSECA at May 9, 2004 11:39 AM

YES, GREAT IDEA! BUT FIRST, LETS ALL FIX OUR CAPS LOCK BUTTON.

Posted by: Steve at May 9, 2004 02:27 PM

Lindsey Pool Is a great band. I love Angel Pumping Gas. My band and I wanna do a cover. We will never get it as good as they have it but it would be fun to do. Great Great song.

Posted by: zags22 at May 11, 2004 05:07 PM

hehe this is great, I just dl'ed the song and was wondering...heheheh only took 5 min and the mystery was solved...

Posted by: Kavan at May 13, 2004 08:22 PM

Ha, that's awesome, i just hung out with 3/4ths of the band on friday, i'm friends with them, and their siblings. good times.

Posted by: Matt at May 16, 2004 06:54 PM

Hey! I am so incredibly happy that this site was made, I would have died if I never found out who the band was that created Angel Pumping Gas... it's delicious ^.^ thanks for the link to their site, is there any way to get lyrics?? or how do I get the actual CD? Please contact me if you know how I can contact them! Seriously, Lindsey Pool rocks and everyone needs to know that song is by them! And the others are so addictive...

Posted by: Rosebud at May 18, 2004 04:40 PM

The bands name is LINDSEY POOL, they have a bunch more songs for dl on their website.

www.lindseypool.com

These guys are great, and every single song they have on there is JUST as quality as the next. Get the word out on LINDSEY POOL!

Posted by: Jim Wong at May 18, 2004 09:21 PM

Apparently CAPITALIZING words is POPULAR among the KIDZ. Thank YOU, Jim Wong. You are THE man. We appreciate what you are DOING for the CAPITALS Across AMERICA CAMPAIGN, which seems to have recently chosen this site as GROUND ZERO for CAPITAL deployment.

Posted by: adam.b at May 18, 2004 10:05 PM

Dude, calm down. While I do admit that his usage of capital letters is humerous, but commenting on it is entirely off topic.

Now, on topic, Lindsay Pool is possible one of the greatest bands in exhistence, I think it's great that they are a garage band.

Posted by: Kyle at May 21, 2004 05:49 PM

wow, Adam was told off on his own website. Another victory for the internet.

Posted by: at May 21, 2004 05:58 PM

Dude, you are so right. I was WAY out of line. I need to calm down and just listen to some LINDSEY POOL. By the way, commenting on my comment was even more off-topic. Let's get back to the topic, please.

Oh wait. What WAS the original topic? I'll have to go scroll up to the very very top and take a look! Oh yes! That's it! It was "Who is playing this song?"

Guess what!

Here's another statement that is not "on topic" --

"Lindsay Pool [sic] is possible [sic] one of the greatest bands in exhistence [sic], I think it's great that they are a garage band."

Posted by: JackHammer at May 21, 2004 06:16 PM

I know these guys. This is the 3rd name change they've had. They went by Postal, then by University, and now by Lindsey Pool.

Good Music. So the reason they were under Postal Service? Probably somebody screwed up because their first name was "Postal"

Posted by: Aaron at May 21, 2004 06:32 PM

Judging by the number of people who have visited this particular page (not just the number who have commented), I would guess the "screwing up" was a very good thing to happen to this band.

Posted by: adam.b at May 22, 2004 12:10 AM

Screw up? No way. That was intentional! They are probably just sitting back right now scratching their heads wondering why is took so long for exactly this to happen. I bet that the band got impatient waiting for us to figure it out and glorify them, and that is why someone closely related to the band had to crack the case.

Posted by: Steve at May 22, 2004 11:00 PM

angel pumping gas is such a good song!! does anyone know where the lyrics for it can be found?

Posted by: sara at May 23, 2004 05:38 PM

Posted by: Steve at May 23, 2004 11:11 PM

Posted by: adam.b at May 24, 2004 11:41 PM

yeah man, i downloaded it under the postal service too, but when i play it, it says that its by a band just called postal, anyways wicked song

Posted by: at May 29, 2004 08:44 AM

Umm. I'm gonna sound like a broken record but, that song is awesome. I too, found it by accident and now i love it. I'm glad i found out the bands name too. I will pass it on to the rest of my friends b/c they all have it downlaoded too. I love this page.

Posted by: Rob at June 2, 2004 05:16 PM

So okay, when I try to access www.lindseypool.com, nothing comes up. It says "wwww.lindseypool.com could not be found please check the name and try again". So uhh, what's up with that?

Posted by: ~*Kris*~ at June 2, 2004 06:01 PM

its sung by the postal service... and sorry it took so long to write back, i haven't cehcked my email in forever

Posted by: Brianna at June 2, 2004 06:38 PM

Answering Kris' question, I suggest going to www.lindseypool.com, not wwww.lindseypool.com. Or just try the address without 'www.'

Posted by: at June 2, 2004 07:39 PM

I had the same problem as Kris. There's no lindseypool.com. Yes i only used "www" and i tried with out the "www" but still no good. This is killing me!!!!

this is withought a doubt THE coolest discussion on the internet. my story is the same as all the others, love the song. then i had a lot of fun laughing at all the comments here. my favorite is definitely adam, oooh the sarcasm. from now on, any time someone says the word 'internet', i'm going to have to inform them that "The internet is *not* less than 33". the postal service rocks.

Posted by: Byron at June 20, 2004 11:19 AM

the band is called Lyndsey Pool and they have an album called Postal.. i also believe they may have gotten sued over copyright issues from The Postal Service..
obviously there was some sort of mix-up since it is such a great discprepency (sp?)

Posted by: Andrea at July 8, 2004 03:26 PM

you can actually but their CD for $8.00 at www.lindseypool.com they have all their CD's listed & you can listen to some songs...

Posted by: at July 9, 2004 06:34 PM

Lindsey Pool is not being sued. Someone just put the song on kazaa under the name "The Postal Service" instead of "Postal" (their first band name) by mistake.

I think if anyone gets sued it should be The Postal Service cause they're getting credit for Lindsey Pool's song.

Posted by: Ben at July 14, 2004 08:22 PM

DO NOT believe this crazy "Ben" and his obvious propaganda. Lindsey Pool has most certainly been sued. See this article: /link/

The Postal Service is after *anyone* with these improperly ID3 tagged tracks. If you have any Lindsey Pool MP3s that were initially labeled as "Postal Service", you will be sued very shortly.

Expect your subpoena to arrive not via FedEx or UPS, as you might assume. It will be delivered to you using, um, the Postal Service, which has also been sued.

Posted by: Gnolreve at September 29, 2004 10:55 AM

Well, well.. Now I've found out who they are and I've also found out that there's a guy called Adam who is a critical sod. I think I shall delete Lindsey Pool's song now that the mystery is gone. I've been skipping over it for weeks whenever Media Player has found it but now there's no fun in that anymore - cheerio! By the way Adam, I believe you'll find that the internet is indeed less than 33.

Posted by: Daniel at October 1, 2004 06:15 AM

I believe that all who comment on this site should cease the proclamation of loving the song and accidentally d/l it as a postal service song. lol. Both of these facts are obviously a common factor for all who view the site.
I also believe that you should NOT tell all of your friends about Lindsey Pool. This is because I think that music should be discovered through personal experience. Also, MTV should be abolished along with radio. Muah haha... Let's see where the forum goes from here.

Also, as I babble, check out Madison East @ http://madisoneastrock.com/
They're a great band from Cleveland. Their Record release party will be at Peabody's on December 23, 2004.

Posted by: Friendly Samantha at October 12, 2004 09:15 PM

Interesting that you said we shouldn't tell our friends because you believe that "music should be discovered through personal experience" in the same post as you tell all of us to check out Madison East. ahhh hipocricy.
also, if the radio and music videos were abolished and no one ever told ANYONE else about bands that are good (as you suggested) then what, exactly, do you mean vy "personal experience"? how is someone supposed to have a "personal experience" if NO ONE (media or friends) are playing them/telling them about music? what other sort of personal experience exists? Other than randomly buying a CD (which is uneconomical for people with less money, and most like to know that they like what they're buying instead of potentially wasting their hard earned cash) going to shows (again, some people can't afford to go to shows of bands they don't know they're going to enjoy, or live in a town where bands play music they would like tour in) or possibly downloading them from the internet (which, aside from being illegal, not everyone can afford to use the internet, and downloading random bands till you find one you like not only takes up lots of hard drive space and time and you might not ever find anything you like).
so, please, enlighten us as to what this elusive "personal experience" you speak of is.

also, while we're promoting bands, check out The Raygun at www.theraygun.com - dancey new wavish fun. some sort of strange mix of 80's esque synthy/Postal service/franz ferdinand/lovely. From Victoria, B.C. Canada, E.P. release at Lucky Bar Jan.7th, 2005!!

Just thought I should also chime in here too since this discussion has been going on for 11 months now. Thanks to Adam, everyone in our family (well except maybe my wife) now likes Angel Pumping Gas. We can't STOP listening to it. Unfortunately, though, we don't know anyone in the band or anyone who is related to the band (as far as I know) and we don't hang with them. But I did find out that really the band is called Lindsey Pool and not the Postal Service. They have an album called "Postal" though. This song is on that album. They used to be called Postal. And University. Also, you can go here: http://www.lindseypool.com/ if you want to check out their music and read up on the band. (Just in case you didn't know.) My favorite thing about the song: he doesn't interview any furniture. - Dave M.
